The summer months bring plenty of time for you and your pet to get outside and enjoy the beautiful season. And while it is a great way to exercise and play with your pet, the high temperatures can also be very dangerous to your furry friend.
Here are some tips to keep in mind to keep your pets safe while beating the heat:
• Avoid vigorous exercise and walking.
• Do not leave your pet in your car.
• Keep fresh, cool water available all day.
• Keep your dog in shaded areas during the sun’s hottest hours.
• Purchase a child’s size pool so your dog can cool off.
• Remember that streets, concrete and sidewalks get extremely hot and can be painful to the pads of your dog’s feet. Avoid using these walkways during the sun’s hottest hours.
Keep in mind that heat stroke can happen in as little as ten minutes so it is imperative to keep an eye on your dog during these hot summer months. Some symptoms of heat stroke in pets include: vigorous panting, thick saliva, dark red gums, dizziness, disorientation, lying down and unable to get up, collapsing or loss of consciousness, among others.
If you feel that your dog is having a heat stroke move them away from the sun immediately and contact your veterinarian. You can begin cooling your dog down by placing cool washcloths and towels on your dog, especially around their head and foot pads.
While the summer months can be dangerous to you and your pet, it can also be a lot of fun. So get out there and enjoy the summer… safely.
